Blood donated by Nepal Army has saved the life of a pregnant woman in Baitadi. Saraswati Pandey, 20, of Surnaya-2, Liskita, who was bleeding profusely during the operation at the district hospital after failing to deliver the baby, was saved by the blood donation of the Nepal Army, said Harish Pant, information officer at the hospital.

One pint each of blood donated by Army officers Bal Krishna Bista and Pyutha Tikaram BK working at Hanuman Dhwaj Gulma in the district headquarters saved the life of the pregnant woman. Saraswati, who was admitted to the district hospital two days ago due to labor pains, gave birth to a baby through surgery. Saraswati was reported to have a 'B positive' blood group and there was no blood bank there. Information Officer Pant said, "We had appealed to the army after she lost consciousness due to low amount of blood in her body. We were able to save her life using the blood donated by the army personnel."

The patient was referred to Dadeldhura Hospital after the operation and both mother and baby are stable, the hospital said. "The hospital always informs us if there is a need for blood. The blood donated by the army has saved many lives," Khil Bahadur Rana, army personnel, said. As there is no blood bank in Baitadi, there is a need to depend on the army and police for blood.
