There are about 1.4 million vehicles in the Kathmandu Valley out of about 6.3 million vehicles registered across the country. According to traffic police statistics, about 12,000 people died in road accidents in the last 5 years. Out of this, about 1,000 people lost their lives in Kathmandu Valley. Last year alone, there were about 10,000 accidents in the valley. More than 200 people died in it.
The main causes of accidents are drunken driving, careless driving, and unsafe infrastructure.
Kathmandu Metropolitan City has formed a 'traffic club' in community schools to increase traffic awareness among school age children. They are given practical knowledge about road discipline, signals and conduct.
