Employees at Tribhuvan International Airport's (TIA) Sinamangal Customs Office have gone on strike beginning today.

Their main complaint is that they have not gotten adequate attention to their demand for a collective move.

These employees, who began their protest with a list of five demands, including a request for a mass transfer, have chosen to cease all cargo inspection and processing activities at the Tribhuvan Airport Customs Office beginning today.

If their demands are not met, they have said that they would cease all freight branch activities by tomorrow.

On the prior Sunday, they staged a three-hour 'pen down' strike as a symbolic protest.

They have also threatened to launch the next phase of their protest if their demands are not granted by September 13.

The employees claim that while investigating a 61 kilogram gold smuggling case, some of their colleagues were arrested and intimidated.

137 employees petitioned the government for mass transfers, alleging an unsatisfactory working environment and psychological discomfort at the customs office.
