Minister for Drinking Water Uma Kanta Chaudhari has directed Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) to be ready for redistribution of Melamchi water in Kathmandu Valley. He gave the directive at a function organized at the Ministry of Water Supply at Singha Durbar on the occasion of the 14th anniversary of the organisation. He also directed KUKL to move ahead in a planned manner to reduce the water shortage in the valley.
He said that the reconstruction work of the project has already started with the objective of redistributing Melamchi water in Kathmandu by mid-April this year.
He informed that the Melamchi Project-2 has so far completed the test of the 360 km pipeline and is preparing to operate the water distribution system to make the distribution system efficient and sound.
About 36 per cent of the pipes have been tested. According to him, the contract agreement has been signed after completing the necessary process to divert Melamchi water to the valley as a temporary measure.
