India records first death from Omicron

India's federal health ministry Wednesday recorded the first death linked to the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

The death has been recorded in the western state of Rajasthan's Udaipur district.

"As far as the Rajasthan case is concerned, technically it is Omicron-related death. He was an elderly person. The person was reported to have severe diabetes and comorbidities," senior federal health ministry official Luv Aggarwal said during a press briefing. "By the time he was detected Omicron positive he had already expired."

India's federal health ministry Wednesday morning said the Omicron case tally across India has reached 2,135.

Of these cases, 653 have been detected in Maharashtra, followed by 464 in Delhi.
