Indian Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat killed in crash

Around noon today, an IAF Mi 17 V5 helicopter with a crew of 4 members carrying the CDS and 9 other passengers met with a tragic accident near Coonoor, TN. Thirteen out of fourteen occupants of the Indian Air Force military helicopter have been confirmed dead. The helicopter was carrying Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat crashed on Wednesday near Coonor, Tamil Nadu's Nilgiri hill district.

Gen Bipin Rawat, Mrs Madhulika Rawat and 11 other persons on board have died in the unfortunate accident.

Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin expressed shock at the incident and said he has instructed the local administration to provide all the help needed in rescue operations. He is also slated to reach the site of the crash.

Gp Capt Varun Singh SC, Directing Staff at DSSC with injuries is currently under treatment at Military Hospital, Wellington.
