South Africa's Northern Cape Province on Sunday said it recorded a "considerable" decrease in COVID-19 infections in schools for the past week, after dozens of schools were closed from early this month.

A total of 103 new positive cases were recorded in schools over the week, "much lower" compared to the previous weeks, the provincial education department said in a statement.

The department also stressed the importance of parents' support in learning at home, as school teaching continues to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

On May 30, the provincial education department said it recorded 264 positive cases at schools during the previous week.

The least populated province in the nation has 8,072 active cases, and the smallest proportion of total cases among the nine provinces, accounting for 3.1 percent, according to the national figures released on Sunday.

South Africa on Sunday reported 7,657 new cases, bringing the national tally to 1,747,082, the highest in Africa, with 1,606,581 recoveries and 57,765 deaths.
