Minister for Health and Population Mohan Bahadur Basnet on Saturday said the pressure of patients in private hospitals has somehow decreased following reforms in the government health facilities.

The launch of OPD service in government hospital including Bir Hospital at 8 am has been effective, he said while speaking at an event organised here to screen the documentary ‘rebirth’ relating to the brain death organ transplantation at the Shahid Dharma Bhakta National Transplantation Centre. “Despite limited resources, the government is committed to providing free healthcare to general people as ensured by the constitution. We are well aware that no poor citizens die for want of medical treatment.” Referring to the establishment of the VVIP and VIP wards in Bir Hospital so as to stop the outflow of a large chunk of money to foreign countries in the name of treatment, he claimed that the government brought reforms and discipline in health facilities. He has directed the expansion and development of wards in Bir Hospital and the Human Organ Transplant Centre, he said.

The ministry secretary Dev Kumari Guragain said the government was effortful to acquire land, build infrastructure and manage budget for the establishment of the Bhaktapur Organ Transplant Centre.

Likewise, Director General of the Department of Health Services Dipendra Raman Shrestha has stressed the need for creating awareness and providing a message to inspire people to donate organs posthumously.

Senior comedians Madan Krishna Shrestha and Hari Bamsha Acharya have called for creating awareness about organ donation after brain death.
