The Vero Cell vaccines that had been purchased from China have arrived in Nepal. The vaccines were brought via a wide-body aircraft of Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC). The aircraft which had departed for China on Thursday evening to bring the vaccines arrived at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) at 6 am today.
Chief Specialist of the Ministry of Health and Population, Dr Roshan Pokhrel, informed the vaccines that the government had purchased from China had been delivered today. He mentioned that today in the initial phase eight lakh doses of the vaccine have arrived in Nepal. Due to the non-disclosure agreement between the government and Sinopharm, the Chinese manufacturer of Vero Cell, the number of vaccines that will be brought to Nepal has not been revealed.
Another flight of NAC has been scheduled to fly to China on July 15 to bring another lot of the vaccines. The flight will arrive in Kathmandu the next day. Similarly, NAC will operate a wide-body flight to China again on July 22 to bring the next lot of vaccines to Nepal. The concerned flight will arrive at TIA on July 23.
Dr Pokhrel informed that the vaccines are being kept at the central vaccine storage facility in Teku. He mentioned that the ministry has kept the vaccination drive against the COVID-19 in priority and the vaccines will be distributed across the country.
The Ministry of Health and Population has mentioned that the vaccines will now be administered by keeping people under the age of 60 years in priority. The government aims to vaccinate at least 22 million citizens.
