20 Far-western municipalities are disaster-prone

Twenty municipalities in the far-western region, including Baitadi, have been declared crisis zones. The government has declared the areas as crisis zones based on damages caused by the incessant rains from September 16 to October 15. The Ministry of Home Affairs, using the powers given by the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act, 2074 BS, had recently declared 33 local levels across the country as crisis areas. There are five local levels in Doti and Dadeldhura in the far west, four in Bajhang, and two each in Baitadi, Bajura, and Darchula.

Doti's Deepayal Silgadhi Municipality, KISingh, Adarsh, Jorayal, and Sayal villages and Dadeldhura's Navdurga, Amargadhi, Alital, Ganyapadhura, and Parashuram villages have been declared as crisis areas. Besides, Thalara, Vitthadchir, Khaptadchhanna, and Jaya Prithvi municipalities of Bajhang, Sigas, and Shivnath municipalities of Baitadi, Darchula Duhu, and Apihimal municipalities, and Himali and Jagannath municipalities of Bajura have been declared as crisis areas.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to declare the disaster zone as effective till mid-January 2078 BS. Due to the incessant rains from 31st September to 3rd October, there was loss of property in the far west. At least 37 people were killed and billions more were injured in the disaster.

Acting Chief District Officer of Baitadi, Khagendra Bharti, said that reconstruction and rehabilitation work, construction of houses, roads and other physical infrastructure would be carried out at the local level.
