90 percent work of Ilam drinking water project

The work of Ilam Bazaar Small Urban Drinking Water Project is 90 percent complete. Drinking water under construction with the assistance of Asian Development Bank (ADB) is currently being connected to the homes of the consumers.

Chairman of the Consumers' Committee Kedar Thapa informed that work is underway to drain water in the houses of the consumers by mid-April. According to him, the road construction inside Ilam Municipality has caused some damage to the distribution pipe and preparations are being made to repair it.

It is said that water is being released in the reserve tank and distribution line for testing. The agreement stipulates that ADB will bear 70 percent of the total cost of the project. Consumers have already deposited more than Rs 40 million, which is estimated to be 5 percent of the initial cost. Consumers in Ilam Bazaar and surrounding areas are expected to receive water 24 hours a day after the project's water arrives.

The project, which aims to supply drinking water to about 4,000 households, has so far connected 2,800 taps. The total cost of the project is Rs. 847.918 million. The project is being constructed under an agreement of Rs. 579.5 million.

Water from various streams in Sandakpur village municipality is being collected and brought to Ilam market in which there will be 41 km transmission line of the project. The project aims to supply drinking water 24 hours a day to 4,100 taps in Ilam Municipality 6, 7, 8 and 9, said Thapa.
