The Chepang community on Friday observed the Chhonam (Nwagi) festival of this year en-masse at Chyangli of Gajuri Rural Municipality-5 in Dhading.
In his address to the event held to celebrate the festival, Bagmati Province Chief Minister Shalikram Jammakattel said the government is committed to bringing the Chepang people into the mainstream of development. He pledged to proceed towards that end by forming a task force.
According to him, the province government is collaborating with the federal government for the upliftment of the community along with the branding of their culture. This year, the provincial government has allocated a budget for the development of the Chepang population.
The Chepang people from Chitwan, Dhading, Gorkha and Makwanpur gathered in Chyangli of Dhading to celebrate the festival en-masse.
The Nepal Chepang Association Bagmati Province Secretary Laxman Chepang said Chepang people from different districts gathered in Chyangli of Dhading to celebrate the festival and those unable to find favorable time to join the celebration observed within the family and the community.
The National Census, 2021 puts the number of indigenous Chepang population at 84,364.
