Beni Municipality of Myagdi district has run a 'Deputy-Mayor with Mothers' Groups' programme to make women self-reliant. According to Deputy-Mayor of the Municipality, Jyoti Lamichhane, the programme was run to socially empower women which would ultimately make them financially capable, independent and self-reliant. Lamichhane mentioned, "We tried to involve women in income-generating activities by running enterprises in coordination with mothers' groups. Incidents of violence would be reduced and employment created as women become self-reliant and financially capable, she shared. She further said three mothers' groups- each one from two wards- had started income –generating and skill-oriented activities. The Municipality has allocated Rs 2 million budget in the current fiscal year for the programme and ward no 3 and 9 were selected for it. A total of 35 women associated with Sworgashram, Beldhung and Mandali mothers' groups of ward no 3 were involved in poultry farming. A training to make slippers is being imparted to 20 women of Galeshwor mothers from Friday while training to make noodles has been launched at Neptechour and training to make potato chips at Toripani from Saturday, said Chairperson of Ward-9, Chakra KC. Seventeen mothers' groups of Ghatan have been incorporated under the programmes of three groups, he added.
