The editor dialogue program organized by Press Council Nepal for two days in Bhaktapur concluded that awareness should be increased for the management of increasing social media abuse in journalism.
Presenting a paper on the role, management and impact of social media in the program, social media expert Dr. Rajiv Subba informed about the national and international practices regarding the regulation of social networks.
He clarified that it is effective to inform the negative and hateful propaganda coming on social media through the network itself. "Social media should not be ignored, it should be embraced."
He said that a lot of contribution can be made in service delivery by using social media. Speaking at the event, the chairman of the council, Balkrishna Basnet, said that it is necessary to increase the creative use of social media. He informed that the council is doing necessary work for awareness and self-regulation by combining the use of journalism and social media. "We are not sitting idle.
He said, "We will move forward according to how we can move forward from the suggestions made in this program."
Sangeeta Khadka, Chairperson of the Minimum Wage Determination Committee, said that social media should be made responsible and matures as the influence of social media is more effective than mainstream media.
Director General of Information and Broadcasting Department, Shankar Nepal informed that even though unregistered media and social networks have been made a procedure, they are doing their homework to address the immediate problem. Netra Subedi, joint secretary of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, mentioned that the Ministry has formed a working group for legal arrangements, keeping self-regulation as the first priority.
Badri Sigdel, a representative of the International Federation of Journalists, said that there should be no thought of social media control.
In the event, the former president of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists Dr. Mahendra Bista, senior journalists Babita Basnet, Nirmala Sharma, editors Umesh Chauhan, Akhand Bhandari, Durga Subedi, Kamaldev Bhattarai, Biswas Baral, advocate and journalist Liladhar Ghimire and others emphasized that such debates and interactions should continue for political clarity in the field of journalism.
More than 50 editors participated in the program.
Jhabindra Bhusal, the chief officer of the Press Council, said that the council is working on the basis of the suggestions of the programs that have been done from the past to the present, and that this dialogue has guided them to make further action plans.
