The famous Ghatal Devta Jatra (fair) is to be celebrated here today. Tilak Singh Bista, the chief devotee of the Ghatal deity, said that the procession of the famous deity Ghatal of Amargadhi Municipality-3 is being celebrated this year after two years.

He informed me that the procession, which could not start for two years due to the Korana epidemic, is being celebrated this year. There is a belief that if there is unrest or drought in the society, Ghatal Baba will fulfill his wish. Dhami Bista of the temple said that all the devotees remembered Ghatal Baba from home last year to escape the Korna epidemic.

It is said that the glory of the mighty deity is unique in that Dhami gives sand and water in front of everyone on the day of the procession of the deity Ghatal. In other years, thousands of people from different parts of the country flocked to see the Ghatal Jatra and worship it, but last year only a limited number of people were able to preserve the tradition. This year, devotees from different districts of the far-western states will come to attend the fair, he said.

Govinda Raj Bohara, Ward Chairman of Amargadhi-3, informed that the Ghatal Jatra will be celebrated this year even though the tradition of Ghatal Jatra has been preserved by a limited number of people in coordination with various clerks as it is not suitable for crowding due to the coronavirus.

There is a legend that the god Ghatal was brought by the seventh queen of Dotyali king Nagi Malla by asking for dowry from Mait. The locals have their own customs for the Ghatal Jatra in different villages. It is customary for the Bohara of Chamsal to carry an urn, a throne, and a mark, and for the Mahars of Bhagwati, Marakatte village to carry a doli, the Madka bull to carry a stick, and the Dalits of Hatigaun to play the Damaha.
