Farmers of Lorpa village in Patarasi village municipality of Jumla have been attracted towards potato farming lately.
After an hour's drive from the district headquarters Khalanga, one enters the village of Lorpa. The people of Lorpa, who have abandoned the traditional farming system and are engaged in commercial agriculture, are now cultivating cash crops like potato, bean, vegetable, apple and okhar.
According to Dhanvir Bohora, a local, potato farming is used for household expenses and education of children. According to the locals, the farmers have become active in potato farming after the local government gave special emphasis to the agricultural products produced by the locals. Ward Chairman Dil Bahadur Bohora informed that the farmers of Lorpa village have given a message to the youths who are working hard in foreign lands to become self-reliant with agriculture at home.
Most of the agricultural products that reach Khalanga market are imported from here. Potato, apple and okhar are also exported here, said village chairman Laxman Bohora.
