Animal rights activists have filed a case in Kathmandu District Court demanding action against Junu Baram, a woman who killed a dog in Tarakeshwor municipality of Kathmandu. Activists are positive on getting justice after the district court registered the case. They also highlighted that Nepal Government agencies do not give priority to animal rights in Nepal. Activists condemned the biased behavior of government towards animal cruelty and rights.

Nepal News interviewed two outstanding people in its studio. These people are working selflessly for the benefit of street animals. Many people are fighting for the proper implementation of animal rights in Nepal. Srijana Thakuri has been fighting for the animal rights for the past 8 years. She runs a rescue center in Suntakhan located in Gokarneshwar municipality and is taking care of 250 dogs, cats and calves. She rescued all these animals from streets. While talking in NepalNews studio, animal rights activist Srijana Thakuri said that she is taking care of all these animals in her own expense. She further added that concerned agencies/bodies must take proper care and legal treatment of these animals.

Similarly, Irfan Khan, painter by profession and expert in computer works, has been involved treating injured animals on the streets. He has been working relentlessly for more than 3 years in his own expense.

Animal rights activist Irfan Khan expressed the opinion that the government can monitor the dogs kept at home and the tax imposed on dog breeders can be used to support the care of dependent animals in rescue centers.

There are numerous problems faced by these types of animal activists and rescuers. Ironically, Ms. Thakuri had to sell off her own house to open the rescue center. The center couldn’t get the permanent location as she had to shift it frequently because of social pressures. So far she moved her rescue center to 4 places. Moreover, people hesitate to shake hands with these people who treat animals on the street.

Unlike in Nepal, lots of foreign countries have taken animal rights very seriously. In Nepal, it is very important to let people know about the animal rights. Public awareness among people contributes greatly in decreasing the number of animal cruelty cases. The local bodies and government must also play an active role in establishing animal rights in Nepal.
