Human trafficking convict arrested, sent to Dillibazar prison

Police on Thursday arrested a human trafficking convict who had escaped and was on the loose for a year.

The arrestee has been identified as Jagat Bahadur Rai (38), alias Rajan of Kankai Municipality-5 in Jhapa district, who had currently been residing in Jorpati, Gokarneshwor Municipality-9, in Kathmandu.

The High Court, Patan, on March 15, 2020, had convicted Rai of human trafficking and other crimes, and punished him with 10 years in prison and a fine of Rs 50,000. However, he had escaped and was on the run.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of police personnel deployed from Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), Maharajgunj detained convict Rai from Tilganga, KMC-9.

According to police, Rai with a promise of providing a job as a domestic help in the Gulf country of Oman had illegally trafficked a person without any permission from the Department of Labour and Occupational Safety. He allegedly swindled Rs 350,000 out of the victim. On February 24, 2017, he had sent the foreign job aspirant to Dubai, UAE on a visit visa. The victim, however, was taken hostage in the border area of Oman and tortured physically and mentally, the victim's relatives had complained to the police.

The CIB in coordination with the Nepali Embassy in Dubai had rescued the victim.

Meanwhile, convict Rai has been sent to Dillibazar prison where he will serve his jail term, informed police.
