Man killed, wife injured in attempt to prevent burglars in Siraha

A person was killed and another one injured when they tried to prevent a group of around seven persons who came to rob them at their residence in Lahan Municipality-22 of Siraha district on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as local resident Pradip Mijhar (48) and the injured as his wife Anita Kumar Dulal (35).

The group of armed men robbed Mijhar who had been operating a jewellery shop at Gadiya chowk in Lahan-23.

According to police, the burglars fired a gunshot at Mijhar who tried to stop them from breaking the gate of his house with a hammer and chisel, on Sunday morning. They also attacked his wife Dulal with a Khukuri before making off with gold ornaments 3 Tola, silver 7kg, ankle bracelet 60 Tola of plated silver and cash Rs 250,000 thousand.

Immediately, acting on the information, a team of security personnel deployed from Lahan-based Area Police Office reached the incident site and rounded up Ram Krishna Chaudhary (26) of Lahan-7. He was detained along with a chisel while he was trying to flee the scene, said police and added that another local resident Surya Sahani was also arrested.

Critically injured in the gunfire, the couple were rushed to local Saptarishi Hospital where Mijhar died during the course of treatment while his wife who had been receiving treatment at the same hospital was discharged, Superintendent of Police (SP) Sudip Rajbhandari told Nepal News.

Meanwhile, investigation into the incident is underway, said SP Rajbhandari.
