The government has distributed identity cards to 615,161 poor households.

As of now, the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperative and Poverty Alleviation has identified the poor in 49 districts and distributed the identity cards accordingly.

The government has classified households as the ultra-poor, medium poor and general poor by analyzing indicators, including source of income and expenditure, status of home, lifestyle and educational situation.

A person who could not spend Rs 22,919 per year is considered poor in Nepal.

Chief of the Poor Identification and Standards Section, Jhabindra Pandey shared that the ID card could work as a base for three-tier governments to provide services and facilities to the poor under the targeted programme.

The federal, provincial and local level governments would provide incentives to the targeted beneficiaries as per the government capacity. The government has laid emphasis on providing the poor population with scholarship, free health insurance and poverty alleviation.

The poor identification programme that started in 2070 BS had first identified poor in 26 districts and in 23 districts later. Task related to identifying the poor has been carried out in the remaining 28 districts and card distribution will be done next year.

As informed, the government has so far spent a public purse of Rs 1.53 billion for poor identification and card distribution.
