Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma, has said journalism has a special role in all movements including changes in the country and constitution making.
Inaugurating the National Media Conference-2079 organised by the Federation of Nepali Journalists in Lumbini on Friday, Minister Sharma opined that the media should be alert on what the changes have given to the people.
She mentioned, "It is necessary to raise the voice of the media about the situation where laws are not allowed to be made even after long efforts and the implementation of the existing laws halted." The Communications Minister stressed the need for implementing the provision of minimum wages of journalists, suggesting the conference to dwell seriously on this issue too.
On the occasion, Vice-Chair of Lumbini Development Trust, Monk Maitya, said the role of the media sector was crucial for the development of Lumbini.
Likewise, Registrar of Lumbini Buddhist University, Dr Tilak Acharya, urged the media to disseminate content in favour of prosperity and peace being positive.
FNJ Advisor Dr Mahendra Bista stressed on restructuring the media sector while former FNJ President Govinda Acharya mentioned that the compulsion of visiting Kathmandu for minor activities like registration and renewal of media should be ended.
Similarly, FNJ Advisor Nirmala Sharma stressed the need for serious discussion on the issues of press freedom in the conference while Press Union Nepal Chairperson Shiva Lamsal suggested forming a separate structure like Press Council for cleaning FNJ membership.
Chairperson of Press Chautari Nepal, Ganesh Basnet, urged the FNJ not to lag behind on cleaning FNJ membership and Press Centre Nepal Chair Bishnu Sapkota urged the government not to limit discussion on media related bills as in the past.
The programme was chaired by FNJ President Bipul Pokhrel.
