Solukhumbu District Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality is going to work strategically for climate justice in Khumbu area. Bringing public awareness for climate justice, drawing the attention of national and international organizations for adaptation programs, setting legal infrastructure, etc. has been prioritized by the rural municipality.
Village Chairman Mingmar Chiri Sherpa said that the snow has started to decrease in the mountains, there is a water crisis, and there is a problem in the crops, so adaptation programs are necessary.
For this, the rural municipality has been working on climate justice and has also partnered for 5 years.
In an event held in Khumjung, the rural municipality has signed and exchanged the memorandum of understanding with the partnership organization.
The rural municipality has partnered with the team led by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Indira Ranamagar who is trekking in Khumbu, a high Himalayan region of Solukhumbu. The agreement was signed by the vice Chairperson Tasilhamu Sherpa on behalf of the village guardian and also by the Chairperson of the Sath Sathai organization Prajita Karki.
It is mentioned in the agreement that there will be cooperation in study, research and development work on the impact of climate change on the local people.
In the program held in Khumjung, a high Himalayan region of Solu, Deputy Speaker Ranamar appreciated the local people for starting strategic work for climate justice and said that he is always ready for the role to be played by the Parliament for its implementation.
MP Manbir Rai, representing Solukhumbu in the House of Representatives, said that climate change has caused various problems in the region and that it has directly affected the local residents, saying that all parties should unite for climate justice.
Village Vice Chairperson Sherpa said that the local government has done significant work in environmental protection and said that since Mount Everest is a world treasure, everyone should pay attention to the protection of this area.
Prajita Karki, the Chairperson of a Sath Sathai organization said that studies the effects of climate change on local people's lives, especially on women, has studied the problem of Khumbu region in depth and determined that it will be brought to the attention of the federal government and international forums. In order to understand the effects of climate change in that area and address the problems of the affected residents, a 6-day walk was made from Lukla to Khumjung with reference to Women's Day.
16 people, including Deputy Speaker Ranamagar, outgoing Minister and Member of National Assembly Dr. Bimala Rai Paudel, took part in the walk.
In the memorandum of understanding, it is mentioned that there will be cooperation on the study, research and development work on the effects of climate change in the Khumbu region, as well as the damage caused by climate change, climate justice, education, health, local tourism, women and children.
It is mentioned that there will be cooperation in the work of bringing public awareness for climate justice, drawing the attention of national and international organizations for adaptation programs, setting legal infrastructure, etc. Earlier, the organization has been doing various climate justice works in cooperation with Sindhupalchok's Helambu Rural Municipality.
A few months ago, at the National Conference on Climate Change held in Egypt, the organization made a special presentation about the disaster in Nepal including Helambu.
