Leprosy, a major health problem in Karnali, has been on the decline in recent years. The state health service directorate has stated that the number of leprosy patients is decreasing compared to the previous five years and the following years.
State Health Director Dr Rabin Khadka said that the detection rate was 6.49 percent five years ago and now it is 3.67 percent. "Leprosy has reached the stage of prevention in Karnali. The number of patients is declining every year," he said. International Non-Government Organizations along with government agencies have been conducting various programs for the prevention of leprosy in Karnali. According to the health directorate, 115 new cases were found in the fiscal year 2017/18, 115 in 2018/19, 89 in 2019/20, 55 in 2020/21 and 67 in 2021/22.
