Karnali is no longer inaccessible in terms of medical education and health care. A decade after its inception, the Karnali Institute of Health Sciences on Sunday launched the much-awaited MBBS classes, and services in remote areas have begun to take off.
The government had set up the institute in 2068 BS at Khalanga in Jumla district headquarters with the aim of providing medical education and health services in remote areas of Karnali. A meeting of the Medical Education Commission held on June 12 had decided to give approval to the academy to educate students in 20 seats at MBBS level. Also, out of the students who have passed the integrated entrance examination conducted by the commission for the first time, 15 of the seats allotted for the academy have been admitted on Sunday. Among them are several female students as well. He had participated in the reception organized by the foundation on Sunday. Om Kumar Yadav, a student enrolled in the first number, said, “I am very happy to be able to come to Jumla and enroll in MBBS. Another student Apeksha Parajuli, said that she has come to study MBBS as the teachers, laboratory and equipment of the institute are good.
For the first time in the academy, teaching of postgraduate level-9 MD of medical education has started from this academic session. At that level, Dr. Rahis Koju from Bhaktapur, Dr. Prasanna Tamrakar from Kathmandu and Dr. Ved Kumar Chaudhary from Kapilvastu are studying General MD in General Practice and Emergency Medicine.
Similarly, Dr. Lalit Singh Dhami, a resident of Darchula, now Dhangadhi, and Dr. Munna Keshari of Bara Kalaiya are studying at MD level in Pediatrics. The institute has also started teaching Pharmacy 9B Pharmacy and Nursing at the undergraduate level from this year. 20 students each will study in both the subjects. The institute has already started teaching VNS Midwifery and BPH.
The institute has stated that out of those who have passed the integrated entrance examination conducted by the commission, 15 will study by paying full scholarship and five fees. The institute has also set up a 300-bed hospital for higher level teaching of medical subjects. The hospital has a 10-bed intensive care unit (ICU) and a four-bed operating room. "With the launch of MBBS classes in Jumla, the overall healthcare and education in Karnali will take a historic leap. It will serve as a cornerstone in establishing health care within the reach of the poor, an official of the foundation said.
It is stated that there are 82 specialized doctors working in the academy for teaching medical education. Prada Thapa, headmaster of the academy, said that the dream of the meritorious students of Karnali to get quality medical education in their backyard has been fulfilled, “The door is open to make Karnali a medical hub. With the launch of MBBS and MD programs at the academy, it will be a cornerstone to ensure medical education and health care here. ”

In particular, Prof. Dr. Rajendra Raj Wagle, former Vice-Chancellor of the academy, made tireless contribution in the management of the curriculum, physical infrastructure, upgrading of Jumla Hospital, additional equipment and skilled manpower for the operation of these two educational programs. He said, “A new era has begun in improving the health of Karnali. Now the emphasis should be on excellent teaching. ” Former Minister for Internal Affairs and Law of Karnali State Naresh Bhandari said that the dream of the people of Karnali to come to Karnali and become a doctor has been fulfilled after the launch of MBBS program.
"Now Karnali produces medical manpower to provide healthcare to the country," he said.
Chief Administrative Officer of the Foundation, Amrit Bhandari, said that the MBBS and MD programs have opened new doors for medical education. He said, "The foundation is providing quality healthcare to the people of Karnali. Now we will focus on education along with the services."
Jumla Hospital, run by the Foundation for Corona Testing and Treatment, has been providing excellent services in the country. The foundation has also been arranging health workers in hospitals and municipalities in Karnali where there is a shortage of doctors. The people of Karnali, who did not get citamole mill in the past, have now been transformed into a place to produce manpower including specialist doctors. Karnali will now produce not only herbs but also skilled health workers that the country needs.
