Nepal on Sunday reported 88 more deaths from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. With this, the nationwide death toll from the infection has reached 3,720.

The new variant double mutant known as B.1.167 has begun to take a toll on the health care system of Nepal. To curb the spread of this variant mutation virus, along with Kathmandu valley, other districts across the country have imposed a prohibitory order for almost 15 days. This variant is lethal to all age groups causing a higher fatality rate.

Last year, Nepal reported a low fatality of COVID-19 but the new variant has hit the health care system with hospitals facing a shortage of beds and also oxygen. Many patients have lost their lives to this new variant due to the unavailability of oxygen.

Nepal reported its first death on May 16, 2020, who was a 29-year-old woman.

At present, Nepal is witnessing a daily record of new infections and deaths.

For the past few days, there have been over 50 deaths reported on a daily basis. Meanwhile, Nepal's fatality rate stands at 0.94 per cent.
