Nepal reports 8,136 new COVID cases, 196 deaths on Tuesday

Nationwide tally hits 472,354; death toll reaches 5,411

Nepal's Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) Tuesday reported 8,136 new cases of coronavirus infection. With this, the COVID count has reached 472,354. Additionally, 67 persons have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in the antigen test.

Likewise, the Health Ministry has also recorded 196 deaths from COVID-19 including the data from COVID-19 Crisis Management Centre (CCMC) and Nepali Army's dead body management statistics in the past 24 hours. As of Tuesday, the nationwide death toll from COVID-19 has reached 5,411. The ministry had reported 225 deaths, the highest daily numbers, on May 11. Presently, there are 114,529 active cases in Nepal.

Meanwhile, the three districts of Kathmandu valley have recorded 2,635 cases in the past 24 hours. Kathmandu registered 2,049 cases, Lalitpur 365 cases and Bhaktapur registered 221 cases, as per the data released by the MoHP.

Likewise, 49 persons succumbed to COVID-19 in the valley — 39 persons in Kathmandu, five in Lalitpur and another five in Bhaktapur — in 24 hours.

As many as 6,891 patients of COVID-19 have recovered in the past 24 hours. As of Tuesday, a total of 352,414 people have recovered from the viral disease, the data released by the MoHP showed. Presently, the recovery rate stands at 74.6 per cent.

Earlier, the MoHP on Monday had reported 9,198 cases of coronavirus infection that had taken the nationwide tally to 464,218.

As of Tuesday, a total of 2,812,959 persons have undergone the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. Presently, there are 114,529 persons staying in isolation while 752 others have been placed in quarantine in the country.

More than 163.78 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus worldwide while at least 3,530,944 people have died from COVID-19, following an outbreak that started in Wuhan, China, in early December, a Reuters tally showed as of 4:11 pm, on Tuesday, May 18, 2021.

The World Health Organisation referred to it as a pandemic on March 11, 2020.
