Nepal has underscored collective efforts among the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Land-Locked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and Pacific Island developing countries (PIDCs) to eliminate multidimensional poverty and structural hurdles in their zone.
According to a press statement issued by the Nepali Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand today, Professor Dr Puspa Raj Kadel, Vice Chairman of the National Planning Commission highlighted the need for unified efforts to diversify trade and alleviate poverty.
Prof Dr Kandel pointed out the need for international cooperation for the availability and accessibility of COVID-19 vaccines, debt relief measures and financial support to the LDCs, LLDCs and PIDCs at the time of a health crisis like this.
Addressing the Special Body on the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Pacific Island Developing States during the 77th session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) in Bangkok through an online platform on Wednesday, Kandel viewed support measures should focus on increasing the social and economic resilience of the vulnerable economies.
He said that as the second wave of COVID-19 was plaguing many countries in the LDCs, LLDCs and PIDCs currently, these countries could play a pivotal role in promoting economic growth, diversifying trade and transforming structural barriers.
He said that due to pandemic, trade, tourism and transport are the hardest hit sectors and the government in Nepal was working towards the prevention of the pandemic and to treat the infected ones in an effective manner.
