Some people have been injured in a clash between police and members of a royalist youth group over placing a statue of former King Birendra Shah at Dhamboji Chowk in Nepalgunj. Nine policemen, members of the group and some civilians were injured in the clash.
A round of water was sprayed in the market. The royalist youth group had placed a statue of the late King Birendra Shah in the chowk. After the police removed the statue, the group also vandalized the statue of Martyr Setu Vik at New Road. According to Madhusudan Neupane, Deputy Superintendent of Police, District Police Office, Banke, the police opened fire after the situation got out of control.
Police said that they have arrested four persons from the spot. Police have cordoned off Dhamboji Chowk and Setu Vik Chowk and increased security at Bipichowk and Pushpalal Chowk after an angry Royalist Youth Group vandalized the statue of Shaheed Setu at Setuvik Chowk.
The statue was restored on the 21st anniversary of the demise of the then King Birendra. During the Jana Andolan of 2006 AD, the statue of late King Birendra at Birendra Chowk was demolished. Chief of Nepalgunj Sub-metropolis Prashant Bista and Deputy Chief Kamaruddin Rai have urged not to disturb the social harmony in Nepalgunj.
He urged not to sabotage public property as a solution can be found by mutual consent through all-party discussions.
