The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government to carry out thorough investigations of all caste-based discrimination and untouchability and bring the culprits to book and ensure effective implementation of the laws.
Issuing a message of best wishes on the occasion of 17 years of declaration of untouchability-free nation, the NHRC has urged all political parties, people's representatives, civil society, development partners, the media, rights activists and citizens to assist in the implementation of law to end all sorts of caste-based discrimination and untouchability.
The NHRC, however, stated that poor implementation of the laws has resulted in continuation of such discrimination despite the constitutional and legal provisions.
At present, the NHRC has 37 cases under consideration in regard to the caste-based discrimination and untouchability while the NHRC has recommended compensation to 205 victims who suffered the caste-based discriminations and practices of untouchability so far.
The NHRC has further stated that impunity has continued unabated as the perpetrators involved in such crimes are not booked.
