No shortage of beds for treatment of COVID patients

Patients are in home isolation

There is no crowd of infected people at Government COVID Hospital,Jhapa, although COVID-19 cases are increasing in the district day by day as most of the patients are in home isolation.

A separate 75-bed COVID-19 Treatment Centre is in operation at Mechi Provincial Hospital of Bhadrapur, where 22 coronavirus infected people have been admitted till Tuesday. Of them, 11 patients are currently on oxygen support.

Chairperson of Hospital Development Committee, Somnath Portel, said, “Although no one can say what will happen in future at a time when cases of coronavirus are increasing, now there is no lack of beds for the treatment of COVID-19 infected people.” The Mechi hospital has been carrying out treatment of COVID-19 patients free of cost.

The hospital has the facility for PCR test as well as has one ventilator, three ICU and 25-bed High Dependency Unit.

He added that the 25-bed HDU would be used for the treatment of coronavirus infected people as per the need.

An oxygen plant is under construction at the cost of Rs 7.5 million of Province 1 government in order to bring it into operation within mid-May. The oxygen plant could refill 35 cylinders in a day, said the Account Officer of the hospital, Manoj Pokharel.

The hospital has 47 big and small size oxygen cylinders and 20-25 cylinders of oxygen are consumed daily in the hospital.

Meanwhile, the number of coronavirus cases has found to increase by four-fold in Jhapa district in a week, shows government data.

The Focal Person at the District Health Office, Jhapa, Jeevan Chaulagain, said that the number of COVID-19 infected people has reached 741in the district on Tuesday while it was 195 on April 27.
