Ownership of elderly women to property stressed

Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizen, Surendra Raj Acharya, has said he was committed to end ill-treatment, abuse and violence against senior citizens.

At an interaction organised by the National Women Commission here on Monday, Minister Acharya expressed commitment to develop a culture of respecting senior citizens in Nepal, stating that senior citizens also expect respect from the nation being not limited to their families, communities and society.

"There is a risk for all senior citizens, mostly elderly women, to be the victim of violence due to illness, disability and dependency", he added.

Minister Acharya further said senior citizen friendly physical infrastructures should be constructed immediately to address the issues of senior citizens and resources for social development need to be mainstreamed to ease the life of senior citizens.

He laid emphasis on the need to increase women's ownership of property, increase awareness and improve the existing system to keep elderly women safe.

The Minister stressed on revision and reform in legal provisions to make them consistent with federalism, adding it was necessary to make policies, strategies friendly to senior citizens in the upcoming 16th periodic plan.
