So far, economic growth of the Nagdhunga Tunnel has reached 43 percent, including mobilization advances. According to the Nagdhunga Tunnel Project, the road excavation work has been completed 76 percent, and the work of filling the dam has been completed 37 percent. Among the structures to be constructed, an overpass has been completed and a flyover is under construction. Two of the three underpasses are finished and three of the four box culverts are finished. Of the three bridges to be built, two have been completed so far.
The main tunnel has been completed 553 meters from the east side and 553 meters from the west side so far. The length of the main tunnel is 2,688 meters. The working audit has been completed. The cross passage has been dug 48 meters out of 128 meters so far.
Last month, there was 30 percent physical progress, but in one month, there has been an additional 5 percent progress. The tunnel under construction on the soft loan of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is the first tunnel in Nepal. The construction of the project was started in October, 2019, with the soft loan of the Japanese government to be completed in 42 months.
The agreement was signed between the Government of Nepal and the Japanese construction company Hajo Ando Corporation in September, 2019. The department has stated that the daily traffic jam on Nagdhunga-Naubise road section will be removed as soon as the tunnel becomes operational. Under the project, two tunnels will be constructed with a width of nine and a half meters and four meters respectively.
Even if three lanes are not reached, three vehicles will be able to move easily on the main tunnel. Even if one vehicle breaks down, the two other vehicles will be able to run. Auxiliary tunnels are said to be used for immediate rescue. In some places, auxiliary tunnels will be connected to the main tunnel.
