Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has directed concerned authorities to ascertain the number of human resources required for different medical fields and finalise the medical education policy accordingly.
While presiding over the seventh meeting of the Medical Education Commission today, PM Oli mentioned that the concerned officials need to first find out the type and number of human resources required for various medical fields, adding that the education policy must then be farmed based on that finding.
The prime minister stated that the commission’s work in the last two years was not satisfactory and directed the officials to be more effective and efficient.
He also mentioned that if human resources are developed as per the country’s requirements then there will be no problem of getting employment too. PM Oli added he has seen some hospitals do not have enough nurses and that postings have not been done in a proper manner.
Prime Minister Oli mentioned that in rural areas it is the female health volunteers who have been doing the work of a doctor and the villagers come across an actual medical doctor only when they visit the urban areas. It would be a great achievement even if nurses were posted in such rural areas, he stated.
He also asked the concerned authorities to inspect the medical courses being run by the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training at the moment and do the needful. Meanwhile, regarding the number of medical colleges that the universities can grant affiliation to, PM Oli said that it depends on the capacity and capability of the university. For instance, Tribhuvan University has more capacity than other universities but a university that has just been established may be able to grant affiliation to only one college.
