Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has directed the regulator Nepal Civil Aviation Authority to construct an airport with two runways at Nijgadh in Bara.
A team of top leaders of the ruling party, including Prime Minister Deuba, gave such instructions after an on-site inspection of Nijgadh Airport today, said NEA Director General Pradip Adhikari. The official said that Prime Minister Deuba and top leaders of the coalition parties had stressed on the need to build an airport.
Leaders including Prime Minister Deuba, CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda', CPN (Unified Socialist) Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal, Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) Chairman Upendra Yadav and Rastriya Janamorcha leader Durga Poudel visited Nijgadh today.
A few days after the Supreme Court's decision on Nijgadh Airport, the top leaders of the coalition parties, including the Prime Minister, have reached Nijgadh for observation. A team led by the Prime Minister has returned to Kathmandu after an on-site inspection of the Nijgadh Airport construction site. They have taken information about the construction site of the airport and the progress so far, said Adhikari.
The Supreme Court has ordered not to proceed with the work of the airport. The Supreme Court, which has rejected all the procedures so far, has said in its decision to form a team of experts to study other options. The team led by Prime Minister Deuba included Finance Minister Janardan Sharma, Forest and Environment Minister Ram Sahay Yadav, Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Jeevan Ram Shrestha, Drinking Water Minister Umakanta Chaudhary and Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority Pradip Adhikari. According to NEA, the team had discussions with the people's representatives of Jitpur-Simra sub-metropolitan municipality, Nijgadh municipality and Kolhabi municipality.
