Tribhuvan University (TU) lecturer Prem Chalauane who was on a hunger strike for the past five days against the government decision to withdraw a case against his alleged assaulters broke his strike on Friday. He had been staging the protest in front of the Kirtipur-based Office of TU Vice Chancellor.
He took curd offered by Hom Kumari Baral of Chitwan and broke his hunger strike. Earlier, the Council of Ministers agreed to withdraw a case against a group of Nepal Students Union ( NSU) charged with beating the TU teacher. Chalaune, unhappy with the development moved the apex court, challenging the government decision.
On Thursday, the apex court issued an interim order in the name of the government, asking it not to implement the decision to take back the case concerning the attack on Chalaune.
It may be noted that the TU teacher was allegedly attacked by a gang of Nepali Congress-aligned NSU on October 6, 2020. Baral was the same person who intervened in the attack against Chalaune and saved him.
She arrived in Kathmandu from Chitwan Friday itself to visit Chalaune.
