Preparations to relocate one-horned rhinos from Chitwan

A study has been started for the relocation of one-horned rhinos from Chitwan. A study has been started for internal and external rhino migration in Chitwan National Park.

The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation has formed a study committee under the coordination of Deputy Director General Ved Kumar Dhakal. The committee will study the transfer of rhinos along with transfer of wild buffalos. According to Dhakal there are many rhinos in the west of Chitwan National Park and some of those rhinos are being studied for pre-migration.

It was conducted by Hari Bhadra Acharya, Chief Conservation Officer of Chitwan National Park, Ram Chandra Khatiwada, Chief Conservation Officer of Koshi Tappu National Park, Naresh Subedi of National Nature Conservation Fund, Bhagwan Raj Dahal of ZSL, Kanchan Thapa of World Wildlife Fund and Assistant Ecologist Hemraj Acharya. 

The committee has studied the first phase of Chitwan and Koshi Tappu. According to Dhakal, rhinos are being relocated to Koshi Tappu National Park, Bardiya and Shuklaphanta National Park

There are 38 rhinos in Bardiya and 17 in Shuklaphanta, 694 in Chitwan National Park. There are three rhinos in Parsa National Park.  According to the latest census, the total number of rhinos in these parks across the country has reached 752.

Dhakal said that he would complete the study in three to four months and submit a report to the department
