Lawyers representing Speaker of the House of Representatives, Agni Prasad Sapkota, have started placing their arguments before the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court, in Kathmandu, on July 4, 2021.

The Supreme Court has sought a written response from the government on its financial arrangement for the constituency development fund.

A single bench of Justice Hari Prasad Phuyal issued a show cause notice to government after conducting a preliminary hearing on a writ petition on Thursday. Finance Minister Prakash Sharan Mahat, Office of the Prime Minister, and Finance Ministry, among others have been demanded written response why Rs 50 million was allocated to the constituency development fund through the recent budget.

In the budget speech (point no 445), the government included the provision of allocating Rs 50 million to a constituency. A writ petition was filed against this arrangement, arguing that it was a wrong trend to distribute money to lawmakers at a time when the country was facing economic crisis.
