Supreme Court issues interim order on citizenship ordinance

Directs government not to implement the ordinance

The Supreme Court has issued an interim order today directing the government not to implement the Nepali Citizenship (First Amendment) ordinance.

The hearing on the writ petition against the Nepali Citizenship (First Amendment) ordinance at the Supreme Court took place today. The initial hearing on the writ had taken place on June 4 and the apex court had called both the parties today.

A constitutional bench headed by Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana was formed to hear the writ. The other members of the bench were Justices Deepak Kumar Karki, Meera Khadka, Hari Krishna Karki, and Ishwor Prasad Khatiwada.

Senior advocate Borna Bahadur Karki and advocates Bishnu Kumari Giri, Ram Bahadur Shahi, Kul Bahadur Bogati, Bir Bhadra Joshi, along with deputy secretary general of Maulik Jarokilo Party Laxman Pokharel had filed the writ petition against the ordinance. The Office of the Prime Minister and the Office of President were the defendants to the writ.

President Bidhya Devi Bhandari had issued the ordinance to amend the Nepal Citizenship Act as per Article 114 (1) of the Constitution of Nepal on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers on May 23.
