Experts and related officials have suggested that the government should prepare from now on to effectively raise the issue of climate-related losses and damages in the United Nations Climate Conference (COP-28). The conference will be held in Dubai next November, focusing on justice for the damage caused by climate change.
Discussing that the White Himalayas have started to deteriorate in recent years, Manbir Rai, a member of the House of Representatives elected from Solukhumbu, said that due to climate change, the flowering season of fruits in the high Himalayas has changed and this has also affected other crops. This opinion was expressed in the discussion on "Women, Climate Justice, Information, Inclusion and Innovation" organized by the non-governmental organization "Sath Sathe" which has been working in the field of environment and women's rights on Friday.
Acting Secretary of the Ministry of Forestry and Environment Dr. Rebatiraman Paudel informed that various programs have been conducted for environmental protection and climate change risk control.
Varnado Coco, Deputy Resident Co-ordinator of the United Nations Development Program in Nepal, said that the issue of damages is related to climate justice and said that UNDP will support and help Nepal in its efforts to deal with climate change.
Abdullah Bin Jarwan Al Samsi, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Nepal, said that the COP-28 conference to be held in his country will review the commitments made by various countries of the world regarding climate and will take further decisions on the transition to clean energy.
A week ago, the Sath Sathai organization organized a 6-day walk from Solukhumbu's Lukla to Khumjung, with the participation of leading women from different areas, with climate justice as the main slogan on International Women's Day.
It was also reminded that there is an agreement with Khumbu Pasang Lhamu rural municipality for climate justice for the next 5 years. Since last year, in Sindhupalchok's flood-affected Helambu rural municipality, various works have been done in cooperation with each other, Chairperson of Sath Sathai Organization Prajita Karki informed.
Tasi Lhamu Sherpa, vice president of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality, said that women are highly affected by the climate crisis.
Chairman of Helambu Rural Municipality Nima Glalzen Hyolmo said that Nepal should give the highest priority to address climate change. Director General of National Parks and Wildlife Department Dr. Maheshwar Dhakal suggested that Nepal should advance its internal preparations with equal importance in solving the crisis caused by climate change.
Prajita Karki, Chairperson of the Sath Sathai organization, said that her organization has been advocating on the issue of climate-related disasters and its impact on women at the community level.
Director General of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Department Dr. Maheshwar Dhakal, climate experts Dr. Navindra Dahal, Dr. Siddhartha Bajracharya, former ambassador Dr. Arjun Karki, senior tourism businessman Angchiring Sherpa, Chairman of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Mingma Chiri Sherpa, Saru Shrestha Joshi , along with Dr. Ravi Sharma Aryal gave various suggestions.
It was suggested that Nepal should conduct an authentic scientific study on the damage and present it on the international stage and take effective measures to get compensation for it, especially in the context of women and poor communities being the most vulnerable.
