The Election Commission has formulated a strategy to complete the counting of votes within six days of the completion of polling. As the term of office of the local level people's representatives expires on 19th May, the commission has formulated a strategy to make the results public by counting the votes of all the local levels by then.
"The counting of votes in six metropolitan cities and sub-metropolitan cities is a challenge for us," said an official under the commission's election management division. The Election Commission has also directed the Chief Electoral Officer of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City to deploy maximum manpower for the counting of votes.
There are 6 metropolitan cities and 11 sub-metropolitan cities across the country. The Election Commission has considered the completion of the counting of votes at the local level within six days as the main challenge and has directed to manage the manpower accordingly.
Kathmandu Metropolitan City, which has the highest number of voters, has 300,000 voters. There are 123,000 voters in Lalitpur, 186,000 in Bharatpur, 280,000 in Pokhara, 124,000 in Birgunj and 133,000 in Biratnagar.
In 2017, the first round of local elections was held on 14th April. In the first phase of the election, it was announced that Vidya Sundar Shakya was elected in the Kathmandu Metropolitan City two weeks later. At that time, the Election Commission and the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer were sharply criticized for the slow counting of votes in the Kathmandu Metropolitan City.
