Women leaders of major political parties have said that women should be given major roles with executive posts in the upcoming local polls.

At a programme organized in the federal capital on Sunday, they said that women leaders were qualified and able for the executive posts in the local levels while expressing doubts about the party leaderships' unwelcoming trend for women in the executive posts.

At the programme organised by the Women's Security Pressure Group on the 112th International Women's Day, the speakers said the women were looking for a position to contribute to the country instead of just seeking something.

On the occasion, Minister for Urban Development Ram Kumari Jhankri argued that the implementation of the rights in regard to women was not satisfactory despite huge success in the right-based approach. "We came through an age of complaint. Now, the time has come for the competition. Let's overcome the challenges by accepting them as opportunities," Minister Jhankri added.

Likewise, National Assembly Member Jayanti Rai said the women have the challenge for effective performance since they were not in the position to contribute.

Also speaking at the programme, HoR Member of CPN (Maoist Centre) Amrita Thapa Magar claimed her party was more progressive compared to other political parties in regard to ensuring 33 per cent position of women. "The role of people's war is crucial for the women rights achieved at present," she said.

Similarly, HoR Member Brinda Pandey argued women were deprived of rights in some cases as they were not informed about the laws formulated.

Nepali Congress (NC) leader Pushpa Bhusal stated that establishing women in the party's leadership was a challenging job while calling for specific constituencies for the women contestants to compete.

Likewise, HoR Member Amrita Agrahari was of the view that additional struggle was needed since women's rights would not be obtained just by beseeching.

Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Hari Prava Khadgi also spoke at the event.
