Business Advisory Committee agrees to table MCC

After a long debate within the ruling political parties on the US-funded project, Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact, in the parliament, the Business Advisory Committee has finally decided to table the MCC compact in the parliament today.

The Committee meeting presided over by Speaker Agni Sapkota forged the agreement to advance the MCC compact, according to the spokesperson at the parliament secretariat, Dr. Rojnath Pande. The discussion focused on presenting the MCC compact in the parliament today itself, he added. The ruling NC will table it.

On February 8, 2019, the government led by then prime minister KP Sharma Oli had agreed to tabling and endorsing the MCC compact by the parliament. Similarly, then Finance Minister Dr. Yubraj Khatiwada had presented the MCC compact in the parliament on July 15, 2019, for its passage.

The MMC had been taking time to make its entry into the House as differing views came within from the ruling alliance itself. Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Dilendra Prasad Badu, and Nepali Congress Whip Pushpa Bhusal attended the meeting on behalf of the major ruling NC.

Others present in the meeting were CPN (Maoist Centre) whip Rekha Sharma, leader Jaypuri Gharti, CPN (Unified Socialist) Chief Whip Jeevan Ram Shrestha, Loktantrik Samajbadi Party Nepal’s Laxman Lal Karna, and Durga Poudel of Rastriya Janamorcha.

In view of the differing views on the MCC compact and protest in the street, the security situation at Baneswhor area has been beefed up.
