Central committee member of Nepal Communist Party (NCP) led by Dahal-Nepal faction, Ram Kumari Jhakri, has been arrested in allegation of ‘crime against state’.

A team of Metropolitan Crime Control Division held her from her residence in Kathmandu Metropolitan City-31 today. She had been criticised for her speech on President Bidya Devi Bhandari during a programme held in Gorkha district. The police held her to investigate in this connection.

Chief of the Division, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dipak Thapa was quoted in Rastriya Samchar Samiti as saying that an arrest warrant was issued against Jhakri mentioning Section 58 of Criminal Code.

Section 58 has the provision that the President and parliament can not be threatened.

Anyone found guilty as per this provision faces a jail term of seven years or is fined Rs 70,000.

Previously, All Nepal Women Association, a sister wing of ruling NCP, had submitted a memorandum to the government, demanding action against leader Jhakri.

Jhakri’s supporters and well-wishers had chanted slogan against her arrest.

Before the arrest, leader Jhakri argued she was adhering to the law.
