Oli appeals to president to not validate UML members' signatures for Deuba

CPN-UML chairperson KP Sharma Oli has written to President Bidya Devi Bhandari that stern action will be taken against 26 members of the party who supported the main opposition Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba. Oli further said they might be sacked from the party as such activities were against the party spirit, hence, urged President not to validate their signatures.

Earlier in the afternoon today, Oli and Deuba presented their claims at the President’s Office for new prime minister with support from the required numbers of the House of Representatives (HoR) members.

Ruling party chair Oli presented his claim for new prime minister with support from 153 members of the House of Representatives (HoR) while Deuba presented the claim with the signatures of 149 HoR members. It makes a total of 302 signatures while the HoR has a total of 272 members.

Incumbent Prime Minster Oli has claimed for the prime ministerial berth as per Article 76(5) of the Constitution with support from 153 HoR members including 121 of UML and 32 of Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal (JSP-N), his chief advisor Bishnu Rimal informed.

A letter of claim presented to this effect has been signed by Chairperson Mahantha Thakur and parliamentary party leader Rajendra Mahato on behalf of JSP-N and UML chair and parliamentary party leader Oli.

On the other hand, Deuba registered his letter of claim with the signatures of 149 HoR members including 61 of NC, 49 of CPN (Maoist Centre), 26 of CPN-UML faction led by Madhav Kumar Nepal, 12 of JSP-N and one of Rastriya Janamorcha Nepal, informed NC chief whip Bal Krishna Khand.

Deuba registered his claim on behalf of the opposition alliance as per Article 76 (5) of the Constitution.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari had given a timeline up to 5.00 pm this evening for the formation of a new government on the basis of the cabinet decision that there was no strong political base for the incumbent government to gain the vote of trust as well as PM’s request.
