The Election Commission (EC) has interpreted that Reshamlal Chaudhary, who was convicted by the Supreme Court in a murder case, was not eligible to become the chief of Nagarik Unmukti Party.
The EC has rejected to update the Nagarik Unmukti Party's decision to elect Reshamlal Chaudhary as the party chair from its general convention held on January 5 in Kailali.
EC's Spokesperson Shaligram Sharma Poudel shared that Chaudhary is not qualified to become the chief of the party as per the SC verdict in line with the qualification determined by the Political Party Act.
The SC had issued lifetime imprisonment to Chaudhary in his involvement in the Tikapur carnage, where seven policepersons and a minor was killed. Later, Chaudhary was granted clemency from President Ramchandra Paudel on the occasion of the Republic Day.
