Stakeholders have said that women should claim 50 percent of the seats in the upcoming local elections.

They not only have the post of deputy chief or vice-president but also the idea of competing for the main post. Participants in a program organized by Nari Jagran Abhiyan Gandaki Pradesh in collaboration with Baglung Municipality in Baglung on Friday have accused men of being candidates to defeat women. They said that even in the post given by the law, women have lost in the name of alliance or different candidates of the two parties.

Participants in the discourse program, which was organized under the slogan 'Respect Women, End Discrimination and Engage in Building a Prosperous Society', said that there was a need for economic, social and political empowerment.

On the occasion, Gandaki Deputy Speaker Sirjana Sharma said that women are considered as second class citizens. "We are not second-class citizens, we are able to work like men and are first-class citizens," she said. She also said that the previous inclusive slogans and issues have only increased the number of members to 33 percent.

Deputy Chief Sharma said that the presence of women in the people's representatives across the country was less than 20 percent. Stating that the presence of women in the judiciary is almost nil, he said that it is mandatory by law that even the deputy chiefs are followed by men. Sharma opined that a law should be made to allow only women to contest in the upcoming election.

Nari Jagran Abhiyan has started a program targeting local elections, said chairperson Anju KC. Federal MP Man Kumari KC, State MP Savitra Rana, President of Nepal Women's Association Shakuntala Sharma, Chairperson of Inter-Party Women's Network Kushum Budha, Chairperson of Baglung Municipality-3 Laxmi Baskotal and others spoke on the occasion.
