Former Germany international Khedira to retire after Bundesliga season

Hertha Berlin's Sami Khedira will hang up his football boots at the end of the current season, the 34-year-old midfielder announced on Wednesday.

The former Juventus and Real Madrid midfielder will play his last game when Hertha Berlin clash with Hoffenheim to round off the Bundesliga season on Saturday.

"It is a pretty tough move, but it is the right decision. 15 years of professional football have left their marks. I have a responsibility to my body. In the end, your gut feeling decides," said Khedira.

Khedira made 77 appearances for Germany's national team and scored seven goals. He lifted the 2014 FIFA World Cup with Germany after beating Argentina 1-0 in the final.

The midfielder started his career at Stuttgart where he clinched the Bundesliga title with the "Swabians" in the 2006-2007 season. After 5 years at Stuttgart, he joined Real Madrid in 2010 and won the La Liga title in 2011-2012, the UEFA Champions League trophy in 2013-2014 as well as three Copa del Rey titles.

In 2015, Khedira joined Italian outfit Juventus and continued his hunt for titles after winning five Seria A titles and three Coppa Italias before he joined Hertha Berlin in 2021 to make eight appearances.

"Every chapter, every club, the national team, every season, every single stage was a challenge. Each station has particularly challenged and encouraged me," said Khedira.
