A main celebration committee for the observation of International Youth Day has been formed under the chairmanship of Minister for Youth and Sports, Dig Bahadur Limbu. The main celebration committee has 657 members, according to Executive Vice Chairman Surendra Basnet.
The Day is being observed on August 12.
The members are the representatives from ministries, province youth council, associations working on youths, Nepal Army, Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force, Youth Self Entrepreneurs' Fund, National Sports Council, and Nepal Scout, among others.
Executive Vice Chairman Basnet informed that the Day would be observed for a week. Various programmes such as interaction, seminar, blood donation, and tree plantation would be organized on the occasion.
In 1999, the UN had decided to mark the International Youth Day on August 12 every year. The Day has been marked across the world every year since 2000.
With the initiative of the organizations working in the sector of youths had begun observing the Day since 2004. The formation of the Youth Council further spurred the activities to observe the Day.
The latest census (2078BS) has put the number of youths in Nepal at 42.56.
