Argentine manager Guillermo Barros Schelotto was sacked as head coach of Paraguay's national team on Saturday after almost two years in charge.

The announcement came after Paraguay secured only one point from their opening two qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

"We wish [Barros Schelotto] and his entire coaching staff the best of success, while thanking them for their dedication and commitment," the Paraguayan football federation said in a statement.

Schelotto led the Albirroja to four wins, four draws and nine defeats after replacing compatriot Eduardo Berizzo in October 2021.

Paraguay are currently sixth in South America's World Cup qualifying group, having opened their campaign with a goalless home draw against Peru and a 1-0 away defeat to Venezuela earlier this month.

The team's next qualifiers will be an away clash with Argentina on October 12 and a home duel against Bolivia five days later.
