Saga of a successful Nepali bodybuilder

Bodybuilding sports in Nepal require a lot of investment as well as long-term practice. Nepali bodybuilder Umesh Rai has been involved in the sport for the last 20 years. Apart from exercising regularly, he has personally spent a lot on dietary food. During the preparation for competition, about RS 4,000 to 4500 per day is required for his food. In a day, he eats 1 kg Chicken breast, red meat, 10 eggs, salmon, vegetables and other foods.


Rai says that one cannot get involved in bodybuilding games by eating normal food at home. Similarly, the practice for this is very difficult. When preparing to participate in the competition, one has to practice morning and evening. And sadly, while the expense is high, the government does not give much priority to bodybuilders. And the players who won international medals in such games do not get any appreciation.

In the 54th bodybuilding championship held in Maldives recently, Nepalese athlete Umesh Rai was able to become second in the 80 kg weight group. That medal is considered very important in the history of bodybuilding in Nepal.


He used to play martial arts and Wusu. He first came third in the Mr. Jhapa competition and Mr. Purvanchal, he had secured second position in the 60 kg weight group. Umesh, who came third in the 2016 Mr. Dharmashree competition, and became the winner of the 2018 Mr. Everest.

In the same year, he won the first South Asian Championship.


 In the year 2019, he was the fifth in the Kuwait Classic competition and became the winner of the Mr. Himalaya competition in the year 2019. He became the winner of the third national champion of 2020 and succeeded in winning the title of Mr. Dharmashree in 2022.

He worked as a trainer in Kuwait from 2012 to 2020. But he used to come to Nepal to participate in competitions. He is currently working as a trainer in a gym in Nepal. Compared to the past, the number of people who are interested in bodybuilding sports is increasing in Nepal.

People have started preferring to go to the gym to become healthy. Due to which, more gyms have opened, athlete Umesh Rai is happy that experienced bodybuilders have started getting jobs as trainers. He claims that he will get a gold medal if he gets the necessary support for the bodybuilding world championships to be held in Thailand next December.
